Encaustic -the Basics Sept. 28, 08, 10am-5pm $100 + $25 lab fee* An action packed day of learning; what encaustic is made of, what tools are needed to work with it, simple application techniques, rudiments of supports and grounds, a base palette, and studio safety. In the morning we will be working on a rigid support, in the afternoon on paper. Expanding the Basics Oct. 5, 08, 10am-5pm $100 + $25 lab fee* A day of combining encaustic and other painting mediums by understanding the compatible nature of wax and oil, and by layering images into encaustic while exploring the qualities of opacity and translucency. We will also broaden our color palette and ponder matte versus shiny surfaces. Color Intensive Oct.12, 08, 10am-5pm $100 + $25 lab fee* A mixed media approach to assembling a knock out palette through; color mixing, color blending, opposing colors, complimentary colors, color juxtaposition. Why does your favorite color sometimes look awful? Why does that color you abhor sometimes actually look good? Leave color prejudice behind and let your colors sing. Find the purple of your dreams. Very Mixed Media Oct. 19, 08, 10am-5pm $100 + $25 lab fee* Today we shall begin by using encaustic on two extremely different surfaces; glass and silicon carbide paper (black sandpaper), and by considering other experimental grounds or surfaces. The afternoon will be focusedy on incorporating non-painterly materials (glass, fabric, metal, found objects) into our encaustic work as mosaic. Contact your inner packrat to guide you on this trip. Just Encaustic Oct. 26, 08, 10am-5pm $100 + $25 lab fee* Here we will again focus solely on encaustics, aiming to understand and exploit it's possibilities while recognizing it's limitations. Starting with the wax itself we will look at various recipes to achieve specific qualities and work with impasto as a textural undercoat. We will also build texture with layers of paint and learn to incise or scrape through layers to reveal dynamic color. There will also be a demo on mixing your paints from scratch. Encaustic Monotype Nov. 2, 08 10am-5pm $100 + $25 lab fee* Finally, we will be printing monotypes, developing our spontaneity and enjoying the rich color of this great medium. The prints will be done on a variety of paper stock and again, we will look at layering and adding oil paint, oil pastel, graphite or other media into the mix. This class will focus on drawing and painting, though participants are welcome to bring printed images to incorporate into their work. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Registration, Location and Directions Registration can be done by phone with a credit card, or by mail with a check.
